May Lawn Care Checklist | Mowbot

Posted by mowbot team on May 3, 2018 14:24:20 PM

May, the middle of spring, brings with it warmer weather, longer days, and a new growing season in your yard. With pollen levels high, your plants are opening their buds and growing full force, and your lawn is greening up.

So, you’ve done your winter and early spring lawn care, and now you’re wondering what happens in mid-spring. Your May checklist is just as essential as your early spring labors. Neglecting your yard in May spells misfortune in summer. If you want to be the envy of the neighborhood, take care of your yard, and it will take care of you.

There are three principal areas to focus on while moving through your checklist. Look to your grass, trees and bushes, and flowers. Whether you’re looking for a backyard oasis, to inspire jealousy in your neighbors, or to have pleasant curb appeal, following a May checklist will ensure you meet your goal.

MAY LAWN CARE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR GRASS

May Lawncare | MowbotFertilization is the most vital part of your May checklist. For a healthy lawn that is as green as can be, fertilize thoroughly and regularly. Use a fertilizer with the right level of nitrogen for your variety of grass.

Pay particular attention to warm-season grass like Bermuda. Start fertilizing in the spring and continue regularly for optimal growth. Warm season grass takes in the most nutrients in warmer weather. Look for slow-release nitrogen fertilizers and limit the level to 1 pound of fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet of grass.

MAY LAWN CARE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR TREES AND BUSHES

May Lawncare | MowbotSpring pruning is only done as a final chance to remove winter damage or to direct growth. Pruning the branches you don’t want slows growth in that area, enacting the change in look or direction you want. Pruning unwanted branches accomplishes this change by reducing the number of nutrients being sent to the root system, efficiently stunting growth. Aim for pruning shortly after seasonal growth is complete.

If you’re pruning to enhance flowering, prune your spring-blooming trees when their flowers fade.

MAY LAWN CARE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR FLOWERS

May is the best time to finish planting summer annuals. Petunias, marigolds, and impatiens like touch-me-not benefit from mid-spring planting and will fare better in the high-heat of summer. When de-potting your annuals for ground planting, make sure you gently pull apart the bottom of the root system; this allows the roots to spread better and faster in the soil once planted, enabling more water and nutrients to enter the plant.
